Rare MASERATI Ghibli 4,7 of the 1st series with Borrani spoke wheels, “matching numbers” engine and colour glazing.

INQUIRY ABOUT THIS VEHICLE

With a design of exemplary grace, Maserati launched the Ghibli (Tipo AM115), whose name was derived from a hot desert wind in the Sahara, in autumn 1966. This two-seater sports car, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro in the service of Carrozzeria Ghia, was so sensational and successful that even at the time it was described as “the most beautiful waste of space on four wheels”.

The flat body with exceptionally long bonnet underlined the presence of the powerful in-house V8 engine, which in this model unleashes more than 300 hp from 4.7 litres of displacement. The generously laid-out front seats in club-chair style provide sufficient space even for very tall drivers and separate the latter from the passenger on the right by means of a wide centre console. The dashboard with its comprehensive instrumentation is so attractively designed that one is reluctant to leave the seat behind. Especially as the interior is light and airy thanks to the ample glazing, and is surrounded everywhere by the finest leather, which is used in abundance.

The body of this Ghibli has good fits of all the single components and wears a paint finish that does full justice to the good overall condition. The most exciting sheet metal part is definitely the bonnet covering the in-house V8 with all its beading and ventilation grilles. The piano-black paintwork suits the gorgeous body perfectly and forms a perfect symbiosis with the tobacco-coloured interior – even if it does not match the genuine colour on delivery.

The car was intensively maintained by its German owner of many years, which is well documented by numerous receipts. The engine starts at the first turn of the ignition and convinces with sonorous acoustics without any noise and smooth running. The 310 hp eight-cylinder engine of this specimen also has a top speed of 275 km/h, measured in the 1969 test, which it delivers to the leaf-spring-mounted rear axle by means of the installed ZF 5-speed manual gearbox.

However, the real metier of this magnificent Gran Turismo with Ghia bodywork is not the left lane of the motorway and a duel with its – often inferior – contemporary competitors, but superior motorised travelling. The fully functioning technology (including the folding headlights) makes you feel good even on long journeys. For delivery to its new owner, this dream car receives a major new service so that the owner can concentrate on the essentials: driving fast in a beautiful GT car.

The Maserati Ghibli are great GTs that are unjustly overshadowed by their competitors of the time, the Ferrari Daytona or ISO Grifo, as they look even more accomplished and impressive in person than in any photo, so that it is difficult to escape the fascination of this automobile – even if you have a non-italophile inclination. At the same time, at about a third of the current market price, you get decisive advantages in terms of space and comfort. Furthermore, this car documented by Maserati Classiche is an option for dedicated collectors or alternative investments.
