Following the enthusiastic reception of the model study at the “International Motor Sports Show” in New York in February 1954, the 190 SL was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March of the following year after being revised within the plant. The sports touring car with clear visual similarities to the “Gullwing” was technically based on the Ponton sedan, but with its independently developed “M121 BII” four-cylinder engine it offered more power than the four-door volume model and reached top speeds of 170 km/h.

Due to its reliable high-volume technology, appealing performance and good handling, the concept of this touring sports car proved to be consistently successful during the economic miracle era. In the course of its eight-year production period, exactly 25,881 units were built as a roadster (with fabric top) and as a coupé with hardtop. According to the available production order from the Mercedes-Benz archives, this vehicle with the model code 121.040 was produced in February 1962 as a “Coupé with roadster top” – the most expensive version at the time.

The first delivery of this 190 SL was made to a company named Kerkenbusch in Munich. In addition to the coveted hardtop, the equipment on this vehicle includes the genuine leather interior, the expensive contemporary Becker Mexico radio as well as fog lamps and whitewall tires. The original engine was fitted with the less complicated Weber carburettors during the restoration twelve years ago (original Solex PHH44 can be fitted on request). Mercedes-Benz data card, on-board tools and a custom-fit dust cover from the factory museum come with the car.

Since 2010, this example has been registered to the same owner and shares the garage at home with a 300 SL Coupé. For occasional participation in events, the car was serviced at a Mercedes-Benz agency during this time. The vehicle is delivered to the new owner with a new MOT and service. The vehicle delights with a convincing restoration quality, its upscale equipment and very good driving characteristics.

In 1962, only 778 units of the 190 SL were produced, of which around 80% went to the export markets, as in previous years. The “Pagoda” was already casting its first shadows as the future successor. This car – as the most expensive version at the time and with German first registration – is therefore a rarity, which was also given the most appealing colour combination during restoration: an automotive classic that has rightly been one of the most popular classic cars of all for decades and will not lose any of its appeal!
