In Germany extensively restored ALFA ROMEO Giulietta Sprint of the second series with 1.6 ltr. engine and 5-speed gearbox in special colour.

After the war, Alfa Romeo had to reposition itself, as the market for hand-built elite sports cars, which had previously been the brand’s core segment, was now even smaller than before. The then state-owned company needed a bright idea to continue and found it thanks to engineer Dr. Satta Puliga, who wanted to produce light sports cars in large numbers at affordable prices under the Alfa flag in the future: the concept for the Giulietta was born and made the model the dream car of an entire nation!

Introduced in 1954, the coupé was named “Sprint” and, in keeping with its name, was a sporty car whose beautiful body was designed by Studio Bertone. The car offered here is from the second series, which was stylistically revised by Giugiaro, and has larger tail lights and modified number plate lighting, while the interior has a three-spoke steering wheel with a black Bakalite rim mounted in front of the beautiful instruments. The standard version of the car already had 80 hp, which was really one of the best engines of its time.

Even more powerful was the “Veloce” version, which, with Weber carburettors and higher compression while reducing weight, reached a top speed of 185 km/h, leaving even the Porsche 356 easily behind. During its restoration in 2006, this car – in the style of the high-performance “Veloce” version – was fitted with a double Weber carburettors on a 1600cc engine and the 5-speed gearbox from the later 105 series, which was produced in parallel at the Alfa factory from 1962 onwards as the successor to the Giulietta.

The engine is also fitted with a fan manifold and open sports air filters from K&N, which underline the intense driving pleasure with the clearly audible Alfa sound. The Sprint belongs to the same owner now for more than three decades and has proven its high performance and reliability in numerous rides throughout Europe. In addition to the standard water cooling system, an aluminium expansion tank has been installed so that there is no risk of overheating even in warm temperatures.

The paint colour chosen for the restoration comes from FIAT’s contemporary colour chart and harmonises perfectly with the dark green interior in high-quality genuine leather. The colour-matched carpet linings are custom-made and round off the very coherent impression of the interior. The upper part of the dashboard is also upholstered in genuine leather, creating a much more upmarket ambience in the small passenger compartment than was originally the case when the model was delivered – just about ideal for long tours!

The Giulietta Sprint is one of the most beautiful creations from the 1950s and has lost none of its appeal to this day. Equipped with the 1600 mechanicals of the successor model, this Sprint is still clearly above the performance level of the expensive “Veloce” models and offers driving pleasure in its purest form with simultaneous reliability and best parts availability. What more argument do you need for a purchase decision…?!
