With the Giulietta, so much changed in 1954 at the traditional Milanese company, which had achieved worldwide fame with highly exclusive vehicles manufactured by hand. The filigree vehicle, originally launched with the internal designation 750, was to have a lasting influence on the history of the brand and bring unprecedented production figures. The model was available as a saloon, estate, coupé and spider with a four-cylinder sports engine, which was previously unknown in this displacement class.

The coupé named “Sprint” was a big hit and for many even more desirable than the picture-perfect Spider. The car offered here is from the second series, which was stylistically reworked by Giugiaro, and impresses on the outside with wonderful details such as the long side indicators and the “torpedo” number plate lighting. The original Bakalite steering wheel has been replaced by a beautiful one with a wooden rim, which sits enthroned in front of delicate instruments. The standard factory version of the car already offered 80 hp, which was really one of the best engines of its time.

If you wanted to, you could also do some serious motorsport with it – which this example was spared. The vehicle was first delivered to the USA in March 1959 and was registered in New York, as evidenced by a certificate from Alfa Romeo Heritage. The Sprint was later returned to its home country, where it was registered in May 2003. In January 2008, the car received the available certificate from the CSAI (Commissione Sportiva Automobilistica Italiana), which proves its conformity for participation in sporting events in the GT category.

The original engine is installed with the model-correct Solex carburettor and add-on parts. The engine was overhauled during the restoration of the vehicle and has since covered a mileage of just over 14,000 kilometers. The 1.3 litre unit has no trouble with the light vehicle and gets down to business remarkably well! The “cuore sportivo” with two overhead camshafts makes its presence known under acceleration in a distinctive but not obtrusive manner and even then made most of its contemporary competitors look old.

Newly upholstered seats in a two-tone leatherette/fabric mix and colour-coordinated carpet trim invite you to linger in the interior, where no retrofitted radio or even speaker holes spoil the look. This car does not need a sound system, the driving itself offers the best entertainment! Then all that is really missing are fawn leather gloves to guide the wooden gear lever, a cypress-lined road in Tuscany and the warm rays of the morning sun for perfect harmony.

The Giulietta Sprint is a “bella macchina” in its purest form. The desirable second series of the coupé combines the advantages of the three model series and embodies the dolce vita of the 1960s like few other cars from Italy. For those who still miss open-top driving, a contemporary Vespa is recommended instead of the Spider – is there anywhere a more beautiful duo…?!.
